Shopify's New POD Print Network: What 30,000 Stores Need to Know
The announcement
Shopify quietly opened applications for a direct print fulfilment programme aimed at Plus merchants doing >$5m/year in apparel. No fanfare, no keynote — just a help-doc update on Tuesday.
Who's affected first
The early-access list reads like the top 50 POD-heavy Shopify stores. If you're not on it, you're not on it — there's no public application form yet.
What it means for the incumbents
Printful and Printify lose nothing at the SMB tier. Both still own the "easy install + global fulfilment" lane. The pressure is on Gelato, whose 130-partner network and Shopify-deep integration was Shopify's likely model for this build.
Our take
This is a 24-month story, not a quarter. SMB merchants won't see anything change. Plus merchants will see better margins by ~6–9%. The interesting question is whether Shopify monetises the network for non-Plus merchants in 2027.
